New Beginnings Cottage Meetings Midway A Season of Prayer IS VITAL May 20 – June 14 As of this week, the cottage meetings are halfway through their process. From what is being heard outside the meetings, there is excitement, enthusiasm, and a renewing of passion for the ministry God is leading us to through this tool. Prayer is vital to all that we do. Not just prayer that asks God to do for us what we want, but prayer that listens for what God is telling us, through our discussions, our ideas, our dreams, and our vision of ministry that is forming. Some have had to miss a session because of illness. Feel free to make it up in another group as you are able. You are looking at alternatives this week and next. Nothing is set in stone. A decision on what FCC’s future will be is down the road a ways; most certainly by the next board meeting in September. Also, it’s ok not to have consensus in your cottage meetings! Both majority and minority reports are to be heard at the end of the process. Meanwhile, ministry continues, such as becoming a Disciples Mission Station; meaning we will be hosting volunteers who come from all over the country to help Volusia County put back together homes that have been damaged from ‘04 hurricanes, and the ‘06 and ‘07 tornadoes—all of the homes of the uninsured or the underinsured in the low- to lower-middle income bracket. We begin hosting a second NA open meeting at our church facility June 9th. This group, known as the New Attitudes Group, comes to us out of a need for a larger meeting space than where they have been meeting. KEEPING IN TOUCH… The church fellowship hall, Pumphrey Hall, has been painted! Thanks to your giving to the Embrace the Church Fund and to the CWF for giving money for paint, the room has been refreshed. The painter was Curtis Toomer, a professional painter living at Palmetto House, and a regular cook at Aunt Catfish’s Restaurant in Port Orange. With the seasonal slowdown this time of year, Curtis says we have blessed him with the ability to pay his rent. God is our guide. The updated church directory is available in the church office now. Cliff Brack, Marie Brack’s husband and member of First Christian and deacon, has been diagnosed with cancer. He has a tumor in his neck and will begin treatment soon to try and reduce its size. Cliff is a go-getter and hard worker. He does not wish to be asked about his condition nor be asked to talk about it. Please honor his desire. Rosalind Brown had major surgery on June 2nd at Florida Hospital in Ormond Beach. Lung cancer required the removal of one lung. She made it through the surgery fine and will be in the hospital for seven days. Keep her in your prayers. Xavier Bowens sends his thanks for your prayers, cards and letters of support. For those who would like to send mail his address is: #698307, VCBS Caller Service Box 2865 Daytona Beach, FL 32114 Billie Brown’s new address is: Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation 1200 North Stone Street DeLand, FL 32720 Shirley Dillon had surgery on her left leg, which went much better than that for the right leg. She is being scheduled for laser surgery to removal a cataract. Please continue to remember her in your prayers. Ethel Shiles has an address to which you can send card and letters. It is: Ethel Shiles, 175 Golden Crown Avenue, Henderson, Nevada 89002. Thank you for your continued prayers. Debbie Ramey Erb remains at the home of her father, Bill. She appreciates your prayers. Her continued recovery is long-term. Luz Green has moved to Ohio to provide caregiving services. Her new address, as of May 31st, is 26 Bricker Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45427; her cell phone number will remain the same (561-699-6553). We will miss her! Donald Hester is continuing to experience health issues and is being treated by the VA, both in Daytona and in Gainesville. Chris & Shelly Sigafose, Noah, and Jordon called to let us know we need to keep them in our prayers. Focus your prayers on their safety in their neighborhood and Chris’ ability to handle his anger with what is going on. G.O.A.L. (GOING ON ABOUT LIVING) G.O.A.L. will meet for lunch on Tuesday, June 24th. As always, your ideas for a place to eat will be appreciated. Try to save this date. Let me know the weekend before, if you plan to attend. —Betty Hershberger THANK YOU! Your kind expression of sympathy and friendship will always remain in our memories. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Dear First Christian Family, The comfort we felt during our greatest time of need was astounding. Our mother loved you all and never wanted anyone to think that she was ill or declining in health. Every time we would ask her how she felt, she always answered, “I'm fine.” To the end, Mom wanted to be dressed up, including her jewelry. She was class all the way to the end. We all had the gift of hearing her say, “I love you.” Her smile will be with us forever. Thank you, again, for being there for our mother. Love, --The Clows, the McSweeney’s, and the Yingers MONTHLY DINNER The fellowship dinner will resume in September. Have a great summer! Visioning Task Group The Visioning Task Group will have its next meeting on June 22nd, at 2:30 pm, in the Centennial Room at the Church. F.A.I.T.H. Support Drive Kick-Off Drive On June 12th, at 6:30 pm, our F.A.I.T.H. ANNUAL SUPPORT DRIVE will kick-off officially with fun and food and a little bit of business. The kick-off drive will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Community, located at 201 University Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL. Ice cream will be the order of the day with our F.A.I.T.H. board members and officers making their own investment commitments for the 2008 year. At our May board meeting, $3,500 was committed from those attending and at the F.A.I.T.H. clergy caucus on May 27th, $3,000 was committed by clergy attending that caucus. Why do we need investments? So that we can function effectively and efficiently for justice issues in Volusia County. F.A.I.T.H. spends only six weeks out of each year seeking the investment dollars. That’s so we can zero in on the issues of injustice in our county the rest of the year. Be present on June 12th, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Community to share in fellowship, ice cream and do a little business for the work of justice. GRACIAS! To all who helped with the Fiesta in any way—for those who planned, helped with set-up and clean-up, and everything in between: the entertainers, those who furnished games and refreshments, and especially those who came and enjoyed the afternoon—Gracias! --Betty Hershberger, Membership Committee ANOTHER PARTY the Membership Committee has decided to host a party each month during the summer. We will have a Movie/Game afternoon on Saturday, June 28th, from 3:00 until 5:00 pm. There will be more information about this later. --Betty Hershberger Camp & Conference “Handle With Care” That’s the theme of this year’s Camp and Conference summer program for our youth—third grade through twelfth grade. The Conference Center is located at Silver Springs Florida. We have young people registered to attend the following camps and conference. CYF Conference is June 15th-21st. Chi-Rho (grades 6-8) Camp is July 6th-11th. Junior Camp (grades 4-5) is July 13th-17th. New Pool Dedication For those unable to attend the open house and pool dedication on Saturday, May 31st, in a word—it was fantastic. There were more than 150 people in attendance and that speaks well of the churches in Florida. After the dedications of the pool, the “wall of honor” and the challenge course, a great barbeque lunch was enjoyed. We are thrilled the pool now has been dedicated to the glory of God. This pool is a credit to the members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Florida, and the many who donated and those who will give to the project. The fund drive will continue until the loan is paid in full. Each donor of record, each group, each church, and each individual that gave money to the Pool Fund are recognized with a plaque or name tag on a beautiful brick wall. Future donors, likewise, will have their donation recognized in the same manner. It has been a joy to be a part of this important project and, at the same time, it has been exhausting. There are a couple more Building and Health Department inspections to be completed before we call it complete. The last electrical inspection (the lights) should be done this week. The final Health Department inspection involves the same lights, as these lights will need to provide a mandated lighting pattern covering the entire pool area. There is not enough space to tell you what an awesome company Weller Pools is to work with. They are the upmost in professionalism. Thanks to all for your support. --Christian Church Conference Center (a ministry of the Christian Church [DOC] in Florida welcome New Members Lori Fischer and John Burrows: Lori and John came forward at the end of worship on April 27th, to transfer their membership to First Christian.
